Fridays with Erick
Erickson The Party of No
05.27.11
Back in 2009 and 2010, the chattering class labeled the Republican
Party “unserious.” It was the Party of No. It had no plans
to fix the healthcare crisis. It had no plans to fix the economic
crisis. It had nothing.
The chattering class held firm in the conviction that voters would
reject the Republican Party because it was unserious and lacked any
sort of plan. But the GOP did have a plan. The Democrats
and their friends in the media just chose to ignore the plan.
Famously, when President Obama went to Congress to pitch his healthcare
plan, he said the Republicans had no plan. Each time he did so,
the GOP held its plan in the air.
The tables are now turned. The Democrats have not submitted a
budget in 757 days. They have no plan to do so. They
unanimously voted against Barack Obama’s budget plan. They have
no plan to fix Medicare or restructure entitlements.
Nothing.
It is now the Democrats who are unserious. At least back in 2009,
the GOP really did have a plan.
There is also a word of caution for the GOP. They won in 2010,
perceived as standing in opposition to major change in the healthcare
system. The Democrats said the public just didn’t understand,
needed to be educated, or that the Democrats just “got the message
wrong.” That’s what the GOP is now saying in the face of united
Democrat opposition.
The Republican Party better be careful not to make the same mistakes
the Democrats did in selling, or rather failing to sell, health care
changes to the American people.
