“Bags of Scum Have
Free Speech Rights, Too”
By Adam Tragone
I couldn’t have said it better myself, John. To be sure, many of us are
sharing the same feelings about this morning’s Supreme Court decision
that ruled in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church. Of course, we all
realize that free speech is protected for every one of us thanks to the
First Amendment, but there is a part of every decent person that
cringes at the sight of the language and vitriol that spews from most,
if not all, of the Westboro Baptist protestors. Let’s be honest, any
one of us would want to start a fight if these guys showed up at a
funeral for our loved ones, no?
With that being said, the Supreme Court made the right decision. The
protestors followed all of the local zoning laws and police directions,
while their speech, albeit heinous and offensive, was of public nature.
As Roberts said in his opinion:
“...On the facts before us, we cannot react to that pain by punishing
the speaker...As a nation we have chosen a different course - to
protect even hurtful speech on public issues to ensure that we do not
stifle public debate.”
And remember folks, our Founders who fought for these rights were
probably saying similar, if not worse, statements about King George and
the British Crown back in the day. Even though we don’t agree with the
content, we uphold the Constitution above all because when it comes
down to it, the Supreme Court isn’t there to be the scolding parent,
it’s there to defend the Constitution.
And now on to more pressing matters. She’s probably going to hit me for
putting it in today’s Daily Events, but today is Emily Miller’s
birthday. She’s on vacation celebrating today, so that’s why yours
truly is pinch-hitting. Emily: On behalf of your colleagues, have a
wonderful birthday!
