Liberal rage
A
comparison to Hitler and Stalin, an outburst in a restaurant
Published on Tuesday, Mar 08, 2011
Gov. John Kasich and Statehouse Republicans have ignited an intense
discussion, their effort to revamp three decades of
collective-bargaining law striking at the core of Democratic Party
constituencies. So there is fury, frustration and hyperbole — on both
sides.
One line that shouldn’t be crossed is linking the other side to Hitler
and Stalin. Yet, that is just what U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown did last
week. Oh, the Ohio Democrat insists he wasn’t ‘’comparing what’s
happened to the workers in Madison or in Columbus to Hitler and
Stalin.’’ He just wanted to show that unions are a ‘’positive force in
society.’’ Still, his logic followed: Those evildoers didn’t like
unions. And neither do the proponents of Senate Bill 5.
Remember the outrage at conservative talkers in the wake of the recent
Tucson shootings? Comparisons to Hitler and Stalin hardly rate as civil
discourse.
Then, there was the incident at a restaurant in Columbus last Wednesday
evening, as reported by the Columbus Dispatch. Seven Republican state
senators, including Frank LaRose of Fairlawn, gathered after the vote
on the collective-bargaining bill. Their meal was disrupted by a group
of union supporters who burst into the restaurant and verbally accosted
the lawmakers. ‘’They stormed through my dining room,’’ the owner told
the Dispatch.
There’s much to criticize about the collective-bargaining bill. You
don’t help your cause when your words and actions suggest a bully.
