“Verity - the quality or state of being true or real; Balderdash –
nonsense.”

No Frills Airline
Verities & Balderdash
By Bob Robinson
How many of you remember the Carol Burnett Show? Raise your hands. I
thought so… there’s still a bunch of us out there.
I look back on the days of early television variety shows and sitcoms
with a sense of longing. They were funny, non-political and “G” rated.
The whole family could actually sit down and enjoy an hour or two of
television without a parent’s face getting red when a child would ask,
“daddy, what is a (insert whatever word you wish, it has probably been
used on today’s television)?”
Remember Art Linkletter? Ted Mack? Ed Sullivan? Red Skelton? Bob
Newhart? Mary Tyler Moore? The Newlyweds? I Love Lucy? Good grief… if
you stop and think about it, the list is almost endless.
This was sent to me by a loyal reader who, if I remember right, has
followed my antics from The Advocate to my blog and now to County News
Online. A staunch supporter of common sense, this transplanted
Greenville native (living in Maryland but only for the moment) has sent
some real gems, both in comments and in forwarded emails.
This is a gem! And I quote:
“Oh for the days of the variety show. My personal favorite was
the Siamese elephant sketch. No Frills Airlines (FUNNY!). Harvey Korman
and Tim Conway were ahead of their time!”
If your memory needs jogging… the reference is to the Carol Burnett
Show. Carol was a genius. Harvey was pretty good. But both paled in
comparison to Tim Conway, one of the funniest performers I believe I’ve
ever had the pleasure to watch in my lifetime.
Click on the link below and sit back for a little over nine minutes of
grins, memories and maybe even a few guffaws. When it’s over, if you
still haven’t had enough of Carol and her partners in laughter, you
have seven or eight more gems to choose from.
Until the next time, God Bless.
