Joe Biden: Blame Bush
-- No, Wait! -- Blame the Tea Party
by Alex Knepper
Perhaps figuring that voters are tiring of the administration blaming
George W. Bush for their own failures, Vice President Biden has
stumbled onto a fun new scapegoat — the Tea Party:
Vice President Joe Biden admitted to a group of supporters in New
Hampshire this afternoon that the President would have been able help
the economy “much, more” if the Tea Party hadn’t taken the House.
“Imagine where we’d be if the Tea Party hadn’t taken control of the
House of Representatives,” Biden said adding that they were “a group
set on obstructionism.”
“They have one overwhelming goal: prevent President Obama from a second
term, with no – apparently no care of the consequences to the economy,”
he said. Biden insisted that the president persevered in spite of their
obstruction and demonstrated “important progress” that could be
measured.
Voters, of course, were not impressed with the economic record of the
previous Congress. “Stimulus” has rightfully become a dirty word, and
Obamacare looks headed for a fall at the Supreme Court. After getting a
taste of unchecked liberalism, voters in 2010 swept Republicans right
back into power — which makes Biden’s message — back to 2009! — rather
puzzling.
Obama, Biden, Pelosi, and Reid had two years of nearly-unchecked power.
Republicans were sent to Congress specifically to stop their agenda.
That’s not obstructionism. It’s acting as a check on the power of the
ruling party. In Biden’s formulation, failing to roll over and submit
to the administration’s every desire is “obstructionist.”
But a failed administration has to blame someone for its failures.
During the Bush Administration, the president was frequently faulted
for his apparent refusal to admit any mistakes. But at least President
Bush stood by his record. Biden is actually tacitly admitting that the
administration has failed to spur economic growth — otherwise, why
would he need someone to blame?
Unfortunately for him, voters prefer leaders to blame-shifters. Obama
and Biden are going to have to come up with a better message than
“Don’t blame us!” to triumph in November.
