Global
Taxes are in Sight
by Luke Powers
The
67th session of the United
Nations General Assembly has just convened and there are already
devastating
power plays going on. One is in the form of a series of proposals
pertaining to
global taxes, which are said to be for “developing” countries.
That’s
right, the UN is trying to
tax people.
These
taxes include a tax on
billionaires around the world, a tax on exchanging currency (e.g.
changing U.S.
dollars to British pounds at a bank),
a
tax on the use of fossil fuels, and a royalty on natural resources
extracted
beyond 100-miles of an exclusive economic zone. If that wasn’t enough,
they are
also proposing a tax on financial transactions like equity trades,
bonds and
derivatives. [i]
This
is a complete disregard for
national sovereignty. The preamble of the UN charter makes it clear
that the UN
was designed to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war …
to
reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights… promote social progress and
better
standards of life in larger freedom” [ii]. Its purpose is obviously not
to levy
taxes on nations, much less individuals.
Even
though third world countries
needing funds is an important issue, this is definitely not the way to
go about
it.Countries
shouldn’t be forced to
give away aid when they need money at home, and the UN isn’t just
forcing the
counties to give, but individuals as well. Just the tax on exchanging
currency
would harm trade, by taking money away from importing and exporting
companies,
which may in turn lead to higher prices around the world. Almost all of
these
taxes affect you personally, if not directly, then indirectly. The tax
on
natural resources will drive up already high gas prices, the tax on
fossil
fuels will increase factory production costs, thus harming our already
weakened
economy, and the tax on financial transactions could tank your 401k.
The
UN is stepping way out of
bounds with these new taxes, they are walking all over every nation’s
sovereignty. To clear up any confusion, here is a definition of
national
sovereignty, “the intentional independence of a state, combined with
the right
and power of regulating its internal affairs without foreign
interference”
[iii]. Without national sovereignty there could be multiple nations
taxing, and
imposing laws, over the same area. A foreign government could just step
in and
enact their own set of laws. If the UN is allowed to impose taxes that
affect a
nation’s internal affairs, (e.g. taxing billionaires even though they
live in
the U.S.) and then literally give that money away to foreign
governments, the
people of America will be forced to support an unaccountable
government. If
this proposal passes, it will set a precedence that national
sovereignty is
irrelevant and it will open the door to higher and farther reaching
global
taxes in the future.
Thankfully
both the GOP and the
Obama administration argue that they won’t back global taxation. But
global
taxes will undoubtedly rear their ugly head sometime in the future.
That is why
we must take a public stand for national sovereignty.
