This is the next logical step for
voters
The
issue: Online voter registration
Our
view: Convenience, accuracy, cost are three
advantages of this sound idea
Ohioans
already can update their address online for
voting purposes. The next logical step is online voter registration.
The
Legislature is being asked to take that step in a
bill introduced last week by Sen. Frank LaRose, R-Copley. It’s the
right step
to take.
Senate
Bill 175 would allow Ohioans to apply online for
an absentee ballot as well as to register online. Doing so
electronically would
become an option, not a mandate. The current registration processes
will
continue to be available for those who don’t use a computer or prefer
not to
use it or this purpose.
But
the benefits of online registration are numerous,
as many states have discovered. According to the Pew Research Center,
70
percent of voter registration was done online as long ago as 2010...
