Market does not
work in education
Shocking admission from the Hoover Institution's Margaret Raymond
By William Phillis
Dr. Margaret Raymond, a staff member of the Hoover Institution at
Stanford (bulwark of a free market) discussed the recent Stanford CREDO
charter school study during a presentation at the Cleveland City Club
on December 10. She reviewed the report that seriously damages the
credibility of the charter school industry in Ohio. During the
question/answer segment, she stated, "This is one of the big insights
for me because I actually am a kind of pro-market kind of girl, but it
doesn't seem to work in a choice environment for education... I've
studied competitive markets for much of my career... It (education) is
the only industry/sector where the market mechanism just doesn't
work..." Check out the podcast of the meeting at the 50.18 sector
for this statement.
Reflect on Dr. Raymond's statement. The CREDO study was
commissioned by the pro-charter Fordham Institute. The study was
conducted by the charter-friendly CREDO organization. Dr.
Margaret Raymond is a "pro-market kind of girl." It was huge for
her to say that the "market mechanism just doesn't work." Raymond
debunks a major argument that choice supporters have always used to
justify the charter industry.
The 130th General Assembly earned not only an F but a zero in
rectifying the out-of-control $7 billion charter industry. There
is no one shred of evidence that the charter industry in Ohio is
successful. Will the 131st General Assembly act in the public interest
by eliminating the market-driven charter sector?
