RNC 2016 -
Score another victory for Cleveland: John R. Kasich
July 22, 2016
With another championship performance, Cleveland shone brightly in the
national spotlight – yet again – as it hosted the Republican National
Convention earlier this week.
While many expected trouble and violence, it didn't happen. Despite
protests, most people expressed their grievances peacefully. When you
consider the fact that some of the nation's most experienced anarchists
and professional provocateurs were among us this week to stir up
trouble, Cleveland once again took a higher path and made the city –
and our state – stronger.
The Cleveland police department – and supporting law-enforcement
colleagues from across Ohio and the country – did a great job in
potentially volatile circumstances. Police were welcoming and showed
the highest level of professionalism, and Clevelanders took a pass on
joining out-of-state protesters, demonstrating their pride for the city
they love and an unwillingness to take a step backwards and tarnish
their winning reputation.
We see that reflected throughout Ohio today as optimism and pride have
been building, and people understand that our renewed economic growth
is creating a culture of inclusion where no one is left behind.
It can serve as a model for the rest of America.
Today, with the convention behind us, it's clear that the police and
community were great hosts to one of America's important political
rites of passage – and for that they deserve our thanks.
At a time when cities across our nation are seeing increasingly tense
relations between citizens and police, Clevelanders and Ohioans have
been working for nearly two years to create a national model for
community and police relations.
Thanks to the good work of former state Sen. Nina Turner, along with
other state, community, religious and law enforcement leaders, Ohio has
an active, collaborative effort underway to strengthen bonds between
communities and police. The goal: to move Ohio forward by bringing
people together for a common purpose, instead of sowing division,
violence and distrust that will only drive us backward.
To be certain, we know there's more to be done and that our ultimate
success depends on our follow through and ability to match bold actions
to our words. But we all can be pleased with the progress we have
seen – progress demonstrated so well by events in Cleveland this week.
During a week that might have produced turmoil, Cleveland and all of
Northeast Ohio were welcoming hosts. Let's raise three cheers for this
most recent championship effort by the thousands of law enforcement and
first-responder personnel who made it possible – another world-class
performance by all.
