Local soccer player
hopes to represent U.S. in Germany
“I just hope we can sell enough chicken dinners to send my
great-granddaughter to Germany to represent the United States on the
Adidas team.” said Marlene McGlinch. As well as being McGlinch’s
great-granddaughter, she is also the granddaughter of VFW Booster
member Fred Foutz.
The Greenville V.F.W. Post 7262 is sponsoring a barbecued chicken
dinner to raise funds to help pay the expenses of Ayanna Kelly. Kelley
has been chosen as one of 36 girls from the United States to go to
Germany for ten days of intense and high level training and
competition. There will be four games against German Youth Girl Clubs
in pro- and semi-pro stadiums and there will be eight training sessions
with German Soccer professionals.
Kelley is 11 years old and is a Chesapeake United Soccer Player on Team
“Wave” wearing #80. She has been selected to represent her
community, her state and the United States of America as a member of
the Adidas Soccer Summer Travel Program (Hampton Roads Fusion) Soccer
Team. There will be a total of three teams going to Germany in July.
As part of the Hampton Roads Fusion soccer team, each team member is
required to pay fees for uniforms, training costs, tournament expenses
and travel costs. It is Kelley’s dream that she will be able to gain
the sponsors needed to help finance this trip. The portion of the
barbecue dinner that is a contribution is tax deductible to the extent
allowed by the IRS.
The Barbecue Chicken dinner will be held from 1-5 p.m. on May 14. Those
purchasing dinners may eat at the post or use carry-out. The dinner
consists of half chicken, potato chips, apple sauce, roll and butter.
Cost is $7 per dinner.
Tickets are available at the VFW Post, located at 219 North Ohio
Street, Greenville. They may also be purchased from Marlene McGlinch by
calling (937) 564-2651. Anyone wishing to help sponsor Kelley might be
interested in the program that would allow a company logo and/or name
to be placed in a prominent space on her soccer bag, warm-up sweats and
on her travel tee-shirt. Contact McGlinch for further details.
