Big Brothers Big
Sisters July match: Larry Schultz and Joseph Jaskiel
BBBS Match of the Month...
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County announce Big
Brother Larry Schultz, of Piqua, and Little Brother Joseph Jaskiel have
been selected as July Match of the Month. Joseph lives in Sidney
with his aunt, Angel Barker. Larry and Joseph have been matched
since May, 2010.
Larry enjoys being a Big Brother and realizes the impact of sharing his
time, knowledge, and life experiences has on Joseph. Their
relationship has become important to both of them. Larry reports,
“Joseph is fun to be with. He keeps me laughing. He tells
some great stories; at least I think they are stories.”
Joseph likes to hang out at Larry’s house and help him in the
garden. According to Larry, “I love to garden…it’s in my
blood.” They also play soccer or grill out, and when they play
Wii, Joseph wins at tennis, and Larry wins at bowling. Joseph
chooses Cazadores as his favorite place to eat with Larry. He
also enjoys watching the Red’s and Dragon’s games and car races.
Larry included Joseph in the family Thanksgiving dinner, as well as a
more recent family reunion.
Joseph says being matched with Larry has helped him be nicer and more
caring. Larry tells him to always work hard, and has helped him
with reading, writing, and spelling.
Angel appreciates the encouragement Larry gives Joseph. “Joseph
looks up to him,” she says. “He’s a good role model. He’s
helping Joseph make better choices.”
Larry comments, “Being a Big Brother/Sister is a great
experience. You just ‘feel good’ when you spend time with your
Little Brother/Sister. Knowing that you can make a difference in
a child’s life is a rewarding, positive feeling. It’s not the
quantity of time, but the quality of time you spend with your Little
Brother/Sister that is important. BBBS is a wonderful program.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County is a non-profit
