Edison Student Works
With Dayton Nursery To Brighten Up Campus
Edison Community College’s campus is looking bright and colorful
despite the recent heat wave and frequent summer downpours thanks to a
generous donation from the North Dayton Garden Center and student Karl
Reid Beck.
Beck, a graduate of Miami East High School, is currently studying
electronics engineering at Edison. He also works as an artist, crafting
stone planters and bird baths that he sells at area art shows and
garden nurseries. While working with Rick Kossoudji of the North Dayton
Garden Center, Beck saw an opportunity to turn a generous donation into
a campus beautification project.
“Because of all the rain we had this spring and the slow economy, there
were a lot of leftover flowers at the Garden Center,” Beck said. “I’ve
been to other campuses where there were lots of flowers and saw a need
for something like this here at Edison.”
Beck spoke with Kossoudji about working with Edison, and shortly after,
a generous donation to the school was made by the Garden Center. Dozens
of flats of annual and perennial flowers were delivered and on
Wednesday, July 20, faculty, staff and student volunteers worked on
planting them around campus.
“I walked around campus to get a feel for what would grow well in these
areas,” said Beck, who then worked with Kossoudji to select the right
plants for Edison’s landscaping.
Students attending Edison classes this summer and those that will be
arriving for fall term in August will have a new reason to get out and
enjoy the beautiful, 131-acre campus, thanks to this generous donation.
