Love that fair!
By Bob Robinson
Three days until we kick off the biggest annual event Darke County has
to offer… the 155th Great Darke County Fair!
I love the festivals and remembrances that start with Memorial Day each
year, then move into Independence Day celebrations and annual community
events from New Madison, Versailles, Union City, Bradford and many
other local villages.
Then there’s the Annie Oakley Festival, Gathering at Garst, Farm Power
of the Past, Steam Threshers Reunion… have I missed anything?
But most of all, I love the fair!
A “country bumpkin” at heart, I knew I was “home” the first time I
visited in the 1990’s. I got a taste of the Greatest County Fair on the
Face of the Earth during that visit. Would you believe I’d never been
to a fair before?
After that I tried a couple of them in California where I lived at the
time.
No contest, folks! The Great Darke County Fair rocks!!
I arrived in Greenville in 2002 as your editor of The Daily Advocate.
It was tough juggling the duties of an editor, assigning events,
processing photos, editing stories… but I still managed to make it to
THE Fair two or three times every year.
Last year, as a retired editor and recently defeated candidate for
Darke County Commissioner (which seven months later made it possible to
give birth to CNO), I was out there all nine days. I was tired and
happy, but then a little sad to see the curtain being drawn, once
again, on the ninth day of this annual historic event.
So how about you? Love that fair? Check out some of the photos from the
Great Darke County Fair 2010… you just might see someone you know.
Then get ready for an even bigger and better fair in 2011! See you at
the Fair!!
