Great Darke County
Fair opens today

Preparations for the 155th Darke County Fair began months ago, but
weren’t noticeable until a few days ago. For one photo sent earlier
this week, Elaine Bailey told CNO:
“I came from the fairgrounds this morning and couldn't believe my
eyes,” she said. “The chairs were up and ready on a Tuesday... probably
were ready yesterday, even before the vendors!
“Such an interesting tradition... I can't help but wonder when it
started.”
Anyone know? Tell us about it so we can pass it on to our readers.
On Wednesday evening Republicans and Democrats were hard at work
setting up their respective tents for the nine-day event.
A new cow barn was dedicated at 6 p.m.
Cars were everywhere, human traffic minimal, as vendors put the
finishing touches on their displays and supplies.
But that changes today. Vehicles other than official fair carts and
emergency response units will be prohibited and the fairways will be
packed with fairgoers ready to sample new fair delights, old favorites,
test their skills, enjoy the rides, watch the events and people, meet
family and friends… and of course, talk politics.
County News Online will have a team of volunteer reporters at the fair
as many of the nine days as possible. Watch for photos and stories
from, among others, Elaine Bailey, Lyn and Al Bliss, Jessica Transue,
Dylan Hoover, Naiesha Thobe, Christy Riley and George Starks.
