Why I Love the Fair

August 1997 was my first year at the Fair. To me it was amazing at how
big the Great Darke County Fair was and all it had. Back then I loved
the fair because of the rides and food. Fast forward to 2011, the fair
to me is so much more than all of that. The fair means many things to
fair goers as the following quotes will show.
Brenda Glunt said, “I love going to the fair to just sit and watch
people as they stroll by. I also enjoy visiting with friends I don’t
see often, having a funnel cake.”
Heather Ann Oda Said, “I love the junk food, fried food, games, and
walk the fat off. Its awesome have fun meeting others who are out there
checking our new tent out there. I really enjoy it.”
Jared Alternberger said, “The sights, the smells, the sounds, it [has]
always been fun.”
Stephanie Leis said, “The Great Darke County Fair reminds me of a huge
county-wide reunion, which is why I think it’s so popular. Plus, there
is excellent food, crafts to see, animals to pet and music to listen to
throughout the week!”
Daniel Barley-Wittler said, “Get to see people you don’t see very often
and I get to do a Martial arts demo and go to the demolition derby.”
Nikki McDaniel said, “My first time here, I’m from Arkansas visiting
relatives. [I like best of all], all foods, really fun rides, just the
atmosphere. It’s really fun.”
Owen who is 3 1/2 years old said, “Because I like the rides.”
Ryan who is 8 1/2 years old said, “Because we get to see people we
know.”
Betty who is a senior citizen said, “I’ve always loved the fair. I get
to see people I don’t normally see.”
Jennifer Stewart said, “Food and friends. You get to see people you
haven’t seen in a long time.”
Debra Rice said, “Food. I love the lemonade.”
Gary Lloyd who is a senior citizen said, “It gives people the
opportunity to meet, greet, and see each other for the year. And to
show their wares. And enjoy the end of the summer.”
The fair is not just for little kids. It is something people of all
ages can enjoy. When you go to the Great Darke County Fair, it is as if
you get a picture of the people, places, businesses, food, and so forth
of Darke County.
The fair for me, is showing off your pet, cakes, cookies, pictures,
artwork; talking, hanging out, meeting, and chatting with people as you
see 4-H displays. The fair is viewing the artwork of talented artists
in the Domestic Arts & Fine Arts Buildings; eating fudge that is
strawberry, chocolate, and peanut butter flavored; seeing all the
animals: cows, horses, pigs, chickens, ducks, roosters, rabbits, and
dogs; and simply enjoying the fair for its mere greatness.
