  Sidewalk Chalk Art kicks off State Heritage Days

By Elaine Bailey

Under overcast skies and on sidewalks cooled from an overnight shower, contestants ranging from ages 4 through 19 met at the northwest corner of Pearl and Columbia next to the Raphael Kirshbaum Building located in the Union City Commercial Historic District to participate in the Psi Chapter of Tri Kappa’s debut Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest.  The art contest was the first of many events held during the community’s annual State Line Heritage Days.

Participants depicted this year’s theme Aboard the Midnight Train using broad ranges of color and creative interpretation on a 58 by 60-inch sidewalk patch.  The masterpieces were completed by noon, at which time the following awards were presented:  First Place Ages 4-9, Dalton Brim from Union City, Ohio; Second Place Ages 4-9, Brianna Fennig from Union City, Ohio; Third Place Ages 4-9, Landon Hunt from Union City, Indiana.  First Place Ages 10-13, Daisy Brim from Union City, OH; Second Place Ages 10-13, Cassity Jackson from New Paris, OH.  First Place Ages 18 and above, Laura Francis from Greenville, OH.

Other participants receiving honorable mentions were:  Jessica Jackson from New Paris, OH; Shelby Fennig from Union City, OH; Kai Hwang from Union City, IN;

All participants received a certificate of participation and winners were awarded handcrafted ribbons.  Photos of the winning entries will be published in a community birthday and anniversary calendar, which will be for sale during the Union City Holiday Shopping Days on Saturday, November 19.

The event was sponsored by the Union City Psi Chapter of Tri Kappa.  The Psi Chapter is one of 146 Active Chapters across the state of Indiana.  In addition to 117 Associate Chapters, there are over 9,000 active participating members.

The purpose of this organization is to bring women into close, unselfish relationship for the promotion of charity, culture, and education.

The Union City Psi Chapter was chartered in 1907.  Its members have donated thousands of dollars throughout the years.  The chapter sponsors high school scholarships for both Union City Community High School and Mississinawa Valley High School seniors and supports numerous state level projects such as the Riley Hospital for Children.
