County News Online has a new offering for readers… Digital Waves. This
is a site produced exclusively by GHS students for students, faculty,
staff and anyone else interested in the “happenings” at Greenville High
School.
The project started with a referral by a Senior Scribes Scholarship
Committee member, Elaine Bailey, to the Greenville and Darke County
Career Mentorship Coordinator, Sue Huston. Huston put CNO in touch with
Lori Hoover, GHS’s IMTV instructor.
The rest is history.
GHS Senior Jessica Transue took the project from its inception and, in
the midst of her other projects and classes over the last several
months, planned and built the site from scratch.
"It is exciting to see Jessica’s pride and ownership in her work,”
Hoover said. “She has great ideas and really has worked hard at putting
this project together. We both look forward to adding new ideas and
people as we expand this adventure.”
Huston said she has mentioned the project at some of her regional
meetings in the career mentorship field and discovered there was a lot
of interest in it. While this may not be the only undertaking of its
kind, it is definitely in the forefront of new opportunities for
students to become involved in online journalism as part of their
learning process.
Bob Robinson, CNO editor and former editor of The Daily Advocate,
following seven years at its helm, said that while the online site
provides a unique information service to Darke County and area readers,
its goal is to offer opportunities to future generations of
communications specialists.
“We give businesses and individuals a platform to provide sponsorships
to help teens in their college endeavors. But more important than
that,” he said, “We are offering students a forum to display their
work, and a chance to get practical experience in producing that forum.”
Robinson added that the goal of CNO’s owners, the non-profit Senior
Scribes Scholarship Fund, is to get all Darke County school districts
involved in the production of its own version of Digital Waves.
“Digital Waves will be the showcase,” he said. “We look for this to be
an example of what a school district can do to give its students
practical experience in online publishing.”
Hoover has plans to bring different GHS programs into the digital
experience.
“Our next step,” she said, “is to bring on board the Greenville
WaveLength, the GHS high school newspaper, in a completely digital
format."
Digital Waves is also attracting the interest of Greenville Students
not directly involved with IMTV or WaveLength. Teen Scribe Naiesha
Thobe, who has partnered with Amy Whittington to produce a cartoon
series for CNO, A Weekly Thing, is also looking forward to working with
the Digital Waves project.
“The Wavelength kids are excited about this, as is Naiesha,” Hoover
said. “I’m feeling really good about it.”
Digital Waves not only provides articles of interest by and for
students, it also provides links to the District website, Daily
Announcements, Clubs & Events, Greenville Athletics and more. Check
