Annie Oakley is Featured in “Annie Leibovitz PILGRIMAGE”
Garst Museum...
It was a snowy day in early 2011 when Garst Museum’s director, Dr. Clay
Johnson received a call from the studio of Annie Leibovitz,
photographer. Ms. Leibovitz was on a journey that would end with the
publication of her newest book. She was interested in the life of Annie
Oakley and wanted to include photographs of some of the artifacts
exhibited in the Annie Oakley Center. She came to the museum, and took
many photos of the Annie Oakley collection. As she worked, a few star
struck staff and volunteers followed her around watching and assisting
with the entire process.
This project was a sort of renewal for Annie Leibovitz as it came at a
particularly low period in her life. She started her journey just
photographing and soon realized she was learning how to “see” again.
She chose places and people that represented power and strength in
adversity. In return, her images refreshed her spirit.
The book, “Annie Leibovitz PILGRIMAGE,” is now completed and on sale at
the Garst Museum store. Starting on page 148 through page 167 are six
photos with accompanying text about Annie Oakley and her life.
It would make a wonderful gift anytime of the year.
