Help someone learn to read and write English
HandsOn West Central Ohio
Can you imagine moving to a new country where even a restaurant menu is
impossible for you to read and understand? Area residents have
the opportunity to help adults learn to read and write English,
improving their chances to find jobs and raise their families in Darke
County.
The Adult Basic Literacy Education program needs volunteers who are
interested in helping adults learn to read and write English.
Lesson plans will be provided, and volunteers do not need to speak
another language in order to help students learn. This position
is available to volunteers who are at least 18 years of age on Saturday
mornings from 9 a.m. until noon. Volunteers are welcome to help
out just one time or on an on-going basis. All volunteers should
have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. An interest in working
with individuals from a variety of cultural and educational backgrounds
is especially helpful.
"Tutors in our English Speakers of Other Languages class assist the
instructor with the class lessons by working individually with a
student on specific skills needed by him/her. This assistance
makes it possible for our students to experience individual as well as
group instruction. Speaking and listening to a variety of native
English speakers also helps our students to participate more
effectively in conversations with community members outside of the
classroom,” says Kathy Stammen, ABLE Coordinator.

Agency on Aging, PSA2, Harry Stephens Trust, and the Darke County HOPE
Foundation.
