Honoring a new
‘famous daughter’
“Thank you, Elizabeth, for your work with Darke County’s young people,
from the House of Representatives of the State of Ohio. You are truly
one of our strongest assets for the future.”
State Rep. Jim Buchy (Dist. 77) read a House Letter of Commendation to
the young lady, Elizabeth Horner, who has been actively promoting
literacy to her peers, at a recent Darke County Republican Men’s Club
meeting.
Elizabeth is the founder of “Read to Succeed,” which promotes reading
to elementary school age children, was a leader in The Advocate’s
“FunDay Bunch” kids under former editor Bob Robinson, currently leads
the Senior Scribes’ Teen Scribes program and was Greenville Junior High
School’s coach in last year’s Power of the Pen competition.
But that didn’t seem to be enough for this “super-charged” young lady.
She has been putting Greenville and Darke County on the map from
Chicago to Washington, D.C., to the Philippines. She has been
recognized by a variety of groups and media sites for her speeches and
writings encouraging the empowerment of young people.
In a “thank you” letter to Buchy, the club and members Robinson and Lyn
Bliss, Elizabeth said, in part:
“I was surprised by the wonderful statements. I really love
working with younger kids promoting reading and writing, but hearing
that you think that I’m doing okay, that my activities are worthwhile
is an added pick-up. Right now, I’m so excited that I started to work
already on several new ideas and lessons for my next meeting with my
writing team.
“Again, I want to thank each and every one for taking the time to
extend me this recognition and for reaching out to young people in
general. One of my favorite quotes by Patrick Snow says, “Only
those who can see the invisible can accomplish the impossible.” It is
so much easier to believe that dreams really can come true when young
people hear from adults that one's journey may actually be the right
path... especially if one is taking "the road less travelled by..."
“I also want to thank Mr. Bob Robinson for believing in me to offer my
very first newspaper assignment at age 9.”
Elizabeth, a senior at Greenville High School, continues to establish
high-level goals. Her dream is to attend an Ivy League college… and has
already been noticed by – and had interviews with – several of them.
