County News Online has offered Interactive Media (IMTV) students their
own website, available from a tab on CNO’s Home Page. Lori Hoover,
instructor for Greenville High School’s IMTV program, has accepted. The
site will temporarily be known as Digital Waves and will be launched
sometime after the beginning of the fall semester.
“This is a great opportunity for these kids,” Hoover said. “Students
currently showcase their work through GHS IMTV productions, Tech Prep
showcases and Greenville Public Access Television (GPAT),” she said,
“but until now, they have not had access to the Worldwide Web.”
IMTV is part of Greenville High School’s Career Technology program, one
of 11 disciplines offered. Students interested in one of the programs
work with Career Development Coordinator Sue Huston to learn if this is
the best course of action for them.
“Greenville is unique in that we have an entire Career Technical Center
right on campus,” she said. Huston also works for Darke County
Educational Service as the coordinator for the Darke County Career
Mentorship Program. A long-standing tradition, the program is available
to all school districts in Darke County.
Interactive Media studies computer software and technology to create
advertisements, websites, animations, videos, and many other means of
visual communication. Students learn skills such as graphic design,
digital photography, video and audio production, web page design and
more. They get a head start on a variety of skills and software, such
as InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator that they will need in college
and beyond.
For students who complete both required years in the program, the
opportunity exists for scholarships up to 1/2 tuition or $3000. Since
the program falls within the parameters of Senior Scribes Scholarship
Fund requirements, they will also be eligible to apply for a Senior
Scribes Scholarship.
The program offers college credit and an opportunity for Internships
with a variety of businesses and services, including County News Online.
Elaine Bailey at Mississiniwa Valley introduced County News Online to
Huston. Huston, in turn, contacted Hoover. CNO is currently offering
Internships to four Huston student referrals: Dylan Hoover and Jessica
Transue, both IMTV students, and Naiesha Thobe and Austin Bell.
Students will work under Hoover’s and County News Online’s guidance to
create their own web pages and links within their site. No information
will be posted on the site except by Hoover or CNO. The Senior Scribes
Scholarship Fund, which owns the site and maintains it as a fundraiser
for scholarships, has approved the arrangement.
Based upon this building block, Hoover, Huston and CNO plan to make the
site available to all districts in the county, as well as school
newspapers and newsletters and other Tech Prep disciplines.
