Harry Stephens supports Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke Counties

June 14, 2011

The Harry Stephens Memorial recently made a donation of $1,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby and Darke County, specifically for the Darke County program.

The funding is being provided to the agency to assist with the Mentoring Children of Prisoners Program.  This program originated through a collaborative effort, where by many Ohio Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies, including Shelby & Darke County, were awarded a three year grant in September of 2010 for their efforts in mentoring children who have a parent in a state and federal correctional facility.  This grant was originally awarded through the US Department of Health and Human Services.  The local agency currently serves 13 matches that are covered under this grant, with a projection to serve an additional 19 new matches each year of the grant.  However, one of the requirements of this grant is that the agency is to receive local matching dollars to support these matches.

This funding helps make match relationships like Big Sister Shannon Langston and Little Sister Destini Price possible. Annie is 10 years old and the daughter of   Nikki Regan of Greenville.  Shannon and Destini were recently matched in February and are already off to a great start.  Thanks to generous donations like that from the Harry Stephens Memorial Foundation, matches in Darke County area continue to grow and help keep affecting children in a positive way.
