Big Brothers Big Sisters Match of the Month
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County announce Big
Sister Tara Thomas, of New Madison, and Little Sister Liz Harless, of
Hollansburg, have been selected as June Match of the Month. Tara
and Liz have been matched since January, 2008.
According to her grandmother, Margaret Hawes, “Liz looks forward to
EVERY time she gets to do an activity with Tara. It doesn’t
matter what the activity is; Liz looks forward to them all. She enjoys
her company, and since Liz has been matched with Tara, she has grown
socially, and this is great to see.”
Little Sister Liz stated, “Tara and I have so much in common that it is
almost like we are true sisters. I can talk to her about anything
or any problem, and she is there to listen.”
“We have a lot in common,” added Big Sister Tara. “I can see how
the Big Brothers Big Sisters program helps make a difference in the
lives of children, and Liz makes it easy and fun for me to be her Big
Sister.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County is a non-profit
United Way member, social service agency. Lisa Brown is Executive
Director of the agency. The program specializes in matching
children from at-risk families with adult volunteer Big Brothers and
Sisters. These adults provide children with positive role modeling, as
well as new educational and social activities. New this program
year was the award of the Dannon Next Generation Nutrition Grant.
Money received from this award has enabled the agency to inspire and
promote a theme of “Healthy Living for a Lifetime” within all of our
programs. If you would like to make the difference in the
life of a child but are unable to volunteer at this time, Big Brothers
Big Sisters has many other opportunities throughout the year for others
to become involved. Learn more about our agency by logging onto www.bigbrobigsis-shelbydarke.org
or calling 937-547-9622 or 937-492-7611.
To help build more strong matches such as this, please consider taking
part in our upcoming 5k Duck N’ Run/Walk which is being held in
conjunction with our Rubber Duck Race. Both of these events will
be held in Tawawa Park in Sidney at the Geib Pavilion on Thursday, June
23! You can log on to the website and download a flyer to the 5k
or log on to speedyfeet.com. To purchase your duck ticket you can
stop in at the BBBS Sidney office, Ron & Nita’s, Meyer’s Garage and
Drive Thru in Newport, or you can purchase them with credit card either
on our website or calling in payment to the office. We are hoping
this year the 5k will be the largest on the Shelby County 5k tour, so
please come out to support the children in this community!
