Versailles,
Montessori students top contest winners
Three DeColores Montessori students and one Versailles student won the
top four honors for their personal stories about a senior citizen who
has had an impact on their lives.
This was the first of an anticipated annual contest to give young
people an opportunity to honor a loved one, or any other senior
citizen, who has had an impact on their lives.
“I was pleased by the response we got to the contest,” said Tim Gade,
Director of Gade Health Care Center, Greenville. “All the stories we
received were great. In fact, I didn’t envy the job of the judges to
pick the top four.
“These are talented young writers and you can easily see from their
stories how the seniors in their lives had an impact on them.”
The judges in the contest were Christina Chalmers, Managing Editor, The
Daily Advocate; Ryan Berry, Managing Editor, The Early Bird; and Bob
Robinson, Managing Editor, County News Online.
The judges agreed that the decisions on the top entries were tough
ones, but were also unanimous in the four chosen.
The winning stories will be published by all three community news
outlets.
The eighth grade winning essay, Grandma’s Story, was written by Hannah
Cloyd, DeColores Montessori School; and the seventh grade winning
essay, I Am a Lucky Girl, was written by Morgan Kelch, Versailles
Exempted Village Schools. The eighth grade runner-up, Memory Filled
Shore, was written by Olivia Wysong, DeColores Montessori School, and
the seventh grade runner-up, Grandpa on a Boat!!!, was written by
Christopher Force, DeColores Montessori School.
Gade Health Care Center in Greenville is celebrating its 50th
Anniversary this year. It has sponsored several annual Easter Bunny
Drawing contests for elementary school students, and plans to continue
both contests in the future.
