Wood Sprite Garden
Club Celebrates 25th Anniversary
By Lyn Bliss, Senior Scribe
“We take lots of trips to tour garden centers and nurseries during the
summer after we work. We have lots of fun!” replied Phyllis Miller when
asked about the Wood Sprite Garden Club. The club is celebrating its
25th anniversary this year.
The club has been donating time and labor to plant flowers at
Greenville Cemetery and in Greenville Park for the past three
years. They have also received donations of mulch and dirt from
Spencer Landscaping and Fitzwater Tree and Lawn. Tom Bugher helped with
some of the heavy lifting and donated wood for the octagon bed project
in Greenville Park.
In Greenville Park the Club plants in front of the band shell, and this
year they laid stone around one of the other beds in the park.
“When it is dry in the summer, we carry buckets of water to keep the
flowers looking nice.” explained Miller. “It is a hard job.”
At the cemetery they plant around the office. This year they added a
bed of roses on the west side. The club donated the roses. The club
finances its projects through the sale and delivery of geraniums each
spring. The geraniums are purchased from a different source each year
in order to distribute the Club’s patronage among the various nurseries
in Darke County. This year they purchased from Garber’s.
In addition to the roses the club planted geraniums, coleus, petunias,
marigold and blue salvia this year.
Prior to the Christmas season, the club also decorates trees at Oakley
House and Garst Museum.
The club meets monthly on the third Wednesday of every month in various
members’ homes. For further information contact Sara Jane Sewell at
(937) 548-8269.
