Mountain Dulcimer Class

Thursday, April 28th the Darke County Parks’ Nature Center was filled with the sounds of the mountains.  With a full house, volunteer Margaret Hensel hosted an informative lesson on the mountain dulcimer, a folk instrument from the Appalachian Mountains.  She began the class with a bit of history about this fretted string instrument. Even if they arrived without any musical background, within the hour, everyone had learned the basics and were beginning to play a few songs. By the end of class Amazing Grace, Bile them Cabbage, Tom Dooley and many other folk music favorites were being played. Each person left with several sheets of tablature to practice at home and a lot of knowledge about the dulcimer. The whole group was eager to meet again and continue their new found talent.  For more programs like this one, check out Darke County Parks’ website and Nature Notes Newsletters:  www.darkecountyparks.org
