Edison Engages Young Minds With Free Summer
Camp
Edison Community College is offering an entertaining and engaging way
to kick off summer vacation with its first-ever Summer STEM Academy
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) June 13-16 for
students entering grades 8-10.
Students attending the free STEM Academy will have the opportunity to
choose from a variety of sessions ranging from computers and web site
design to animated graphics and robotics. There will be a three hour
session in the morning and one in the afternoon where students can
experience a variety of high-tech fields from Edison staff and faculty.
This year’s academy will feature a crime scene investigation program,
which will allow students to explore a simulated crime scene and use
evidence techniques to find out what really happened.
“We wanted an opportunity for students to really develop their projects
in a hands-on environment,” said Patti Ross, Dean of Information
Technology and Engineering. “This is the first year for this academy
and we’ve made it very activity based to get students involved.”
Also featured this year will be a session called Monsters Vs. Aliens,
which gives students the tools and instruction on how to create their
own graphics-driven presentation of an epic comics confrontation, and
an additional session on editing and publishing that puts digital video
equipment and editing tools in their hands to create short video
productions.
In addition to classroom work, there will also be a session called
Catch and Release, which will take students outside onto the Edison
Disc Golf course where they’ll learn how muscles and body motion work
together to help or hurt performance.
Because of a grant from the Ohio Department of Education, there is no
charge for the camp, but registration is limited to the first 100
students. Registration for daily sessions begins each day at 8 a.m.
with one three-hour session in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Lunch is provided and the day’s sessions end at 3:30 p.m. More
information, including the registration form, can be found at www.edisonohio.edu/STEMacademy.
