Key Club students recognized for service

Thirty-nine Greenville High School Key Club members were among the hundreds of students honored at the annual GHS Underclass Awards Assembly Thursday.

The 2010-2011 Key Club, a student-led community service organization sponsored by Greenville High School and Greenville Kiwanis, performed an unprecedented 2087 hours of community and club service. For the first time, the club recognized five tiers of service: Century Club (100 hours of personal service or more), Platinum (75 hours or more), Gold (50 hours or more), Silver (25 hours or more) and Volunteer (13 hours or more).

All 2010-11 Officers received the Century Club honor: Kent Holmes, President; Angela Borgerding, Vice President; Prital Mehta, Secretary; Claire Sherman, Treasurer and Jenilee Braun, Newsletter Editor.

In addition to Century Club recognition, Mariah Reitz was also recognized as the Key Club International Div. 3 Ohio District Lt. Governor for 2010-11. GHS Junior Natasha Swank, recognized this year for Gold Service, was elected Div. 3 Lt. Governor for 2011-12 in April. The Div. 3 Lt. Gov. is responsible for local Key Clubs in the District: Tri-Village, Greenville, Covington, Troy, Piqua and Miami East.

Two students – Rebecca Braun and Daniel Cox – received the Platinum recognition for service.

Six students – Pankti Bhavsar, Tracy Bunger, Scott Wirrig, Spencer Lewis, Natasha Swank and Joshua Schoeff – received Gold recognition.

Silver recognition went to: Cierra Whitesel, Brittany Peters, Zaid Essak, Nicole Noble, Sarah Herzog, Adila Essak, Tara Guiollezet, Sarah Fisher, Terah Colby and Lizzie Hart.

Volunteer recognition went to: Courtney Fullroth, Abby Kindley, Marlaina Harshbarger, Shelby Price, Will McCabe, Hannah Shepherd, Erin Albright, Sydney Hunt, Savannah Cook, Makayla Freeman, Jenna Gnade, Aiste Maksrytyte, Courtney Overton, Troy Boney, Taylor Davis, Tori Wisner and Catherine Gibson.

2011-2012 Key Club President Claire Sherman announced a sign up sheet – with cookies and cup cakes – for next year’s club members immediately following the assembly… students packed the area around the table to take advantage of the announcement.

Whether the sign-ups matched the cookie snatching remains to be seen.

This year’s GHS Key Club tackled 26 community service projects, including several Greenville Township Cemetery Cleanups, Kiwanis Darke County Fair Gate 5 and Pancake Breakfast fundraisers, Kiwanis Christmas Bell Ringing, Trick or Treat for FISH, Rake and Run, Prairie Days and more.

2011-12 Key Club officers are Claire Sherman, President; Scott Wirrig, Vice President; Jenilee Braun, Bulletin Editor; Pankti Bhavsar and Cierra Whitesel, co-Secretaries; and Daniel Cox, Treasurer. GHS Principal Chris Mortensen is the club’s Academic Advisor; Bob Robinson is the Kiwanis Advisor.

Students at the annual Underclass Awards Assembly – including many Key Club members – were honored for academics (Academicians and Honor Roll), Academic Quiz Bowl Team, Athletic Excellence, Automotive Technology Skills USA, Language Arts Writing, Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training, Student Council, Foreign Language Achievement (French and Spanish) and Art.

After the assembly, students flock the Key Club table for cookies, cup cakes
and to sign up for the 2011-2012 school year. It remains to be seen if sign-ups match
the number of cookies and cup cakes taken.
