Positive Living with Less Income #2
Living Positive with Less Income
Smaller Retail Stores

The last article was talking about going grocery shopping and making
some different choices. I would like to continue that theme. Today we
have groceries at many different retail stores.
One can really save some dollars if you shop carefully. You really
should watch those expiration dates. But if you are purchasing well
within the date posted you will have a safe product provided you use it
prior to the date. Now let’s look at some more savings.
About every kid I know likes a cookie or cheesy crackers.
You can get cookies for a dollar a pack if you look for them in some of
the smaller retail stores. And cheesy crackers are less also. Might not
taste exactly like your name brand, but I have discovered that my
grandchildren do not care. They just like eating them. And a cookie is
sweet regardless where it is purchased. A vanilla cream is a vanilla
cream cookie regardless where it is purchased.
Do you know how many ways you can fix a can of pork and beans? They are
really a good value at some of the smaller retail stores and you can
stretch them many ways. My children always liked them with hamburger or
hot dogs mixed in and a slice of bread and butter.
There is another way to save a lot of money. Those little green or
yellow bags really do work. Do you know that you can keep fresh
strawberries for over a week in one of those bags? That means that you
can take advantage of the sale prices and buy two or three at a time.
They will keep. And one of the best kept secrets in keeping food is the
banana. I put them in the refrigerator. They keep a long time and do
not get over ripe or soft. They turn black but when you peel the banana
it is firm and good. Nice and white too. Am I getting through yet?
The mix and match specials some stores run is a real saving. And with
special planning you can just about fix all the food at a much reduced
price. Instead of working around a recipe and purchasing for the
recipe, purchase the food on sale and cook around the product. Like
Tuna. You can find many recipes on the internet for tuna. There must be
a hundred ways to fix beans and they are rich in protein and low in
fat. Folks eating well on a budget are easy once you get the hang of
it. Steaks are not part of my budget. Hamburger is. And believe me when
I tell you that you can create many meals with hamburger. And if you
are concerned with fats you can substitute turkey burger meat for
hamburger, and I bet the fussy people at your house will not know the
difference. I have to fool my husband a lot. It is easy with turkey
burger. So here is my saving recipe for the day.
Cook some spaghetti; add some chopped veggies like
peppers, onions, carrots, oregano, and basil. Cook a small amount of
ground meat. Pour off fat. Add to the spaghetti mixture and toss with
some olive oil and melted butter. Good stuff at a very low
price.
