Edison Police Academy
Instructor Receives Range Honors
Edison Community College Basic Peace Officer Academy Commander Joseph
Mahan received the highest score in the semi-automatic pistol
instructor course at the Ohio Police Officer Training Academy (OPOTA)
in London, Ohio.
Students who sign up for the course must qualify on the range without
prior practice. They must hit 20 out of 25 rounds in a specified area
of the target. Mahan hit 25 out of 25 in both the pre-course and final
qualifications.
Students must also participate in ‘teach-backs’ – showing proficiency
to instruct in both the classroom and on the range. Mahan scored 100
percent in both of these areas, as well on two written tests that were
given. He also scored 100 percent on the practical shooting test.
For achieving the highest score in the course, Mahan received an OPOTA
Challenge Coin.
This training will certify Mahan to be a firearms instructor in the
Basic Peace Officer Academy. In addition to being the commander since
2003, Mahan has instructed in academies in Ohio since the late 1980s in
both corrections academies and basic peace officer academies. Mahan has
more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and is the
president of The Ohio Police and Fire Games.
