Ghouls & Goblins
spread out through Greenville
By Bob Robinson
Thursday night’s invasion on South Broadway spread through town on
Sunday to various neighborhoods in Greenville where ghosts, princesses,
goblins, skeletons and other fantasies (or nightmare visions?) ask for
treats with the promise of a trick or two if they have to leave
empty-handed.
Ages ranged from about six months to a lot older than one would expect
for a Halloween on a Sunday afternoon.
The first Halloween I remember I was about four or five, I guess. Mom
took my sister and me around our neighborhood in St. Louis, where I
remember bringing a grocery sack home, full of all manners of treats
and goodies…
I tried to eat most of it in one night.
And got sick.
My other memory is a little brighter. I took my boys trick or treating
in the small mountain community of Crestline, Calif. Even in 1970s
California, this scene was reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting or
the trick-or-treat segment from ET.
We were quite a set. Me, my 15-year-old, my 5-year-old and our raccoon.
Fred (the raccoon) had adopted us. Wherever his home was, he decided
life with us (ready-made food) was preferable. I think the kids got
extra treats because of the show Fred put on walking back and forth
across my back and shoulders.
One delighted resident insisted on giving him peanuts. Had lots of
shells to shake out of my clothes that night.
Looking at the kids in their costumes on Sunday reminded me of those
Halloweens and a couple others. How about you? Did they bring back any
memories?
Enjoy the photos.
