“Someday I want to be a teacher so that I can open doors for the next generation.  Who knows – maybe the next great scientist or mathematician or engineer will be a girl in my class.  Maybe I can help her develop the confidence she needs to make sure no hurdles stand in her way.”

A winner of the Mitse essay contest wrote about her future as a teacher in one of the Math, Information Technology, Science, Engineering (Mitse) fields. Of the more than 200 area students who participated in Edison Community College’s annual We Are IT event, 68 girls wrote essays about their possible roles in the future.

“There were some great essays,” one advisor said as the session prepared to wrap up for the day. “I don’t know how they managed to pick the top ones.”

Edison’s three English faculty read each of the essays before choosing the winners.

The top seven contest winners were: Caitlyn Millhouse, Anna, first; Hannah Goodwin, Piqua, second; Abigail Ball, Sidney, third; Ashley Dentinger, Anna, fourth; Jessica Heitkamp, Versailles, fifth; Nicole Fogt, Jackson Center, sixth; and Colleen Maurer, Botkins, seventh.

Fifteen area schools participated in the We Are IT event: Anna, Greenville, Versailles, Mississinawa Valley, UVCC, Piqua; Northmont, Troy, Fairlawn, Tipp City, Botkins, Sidney, Covington, Bradford and Jackson Center.

Patti Ross, Dean of Information Technology & Engineering, thanked everyone at Edison for their support in making the event a success.

“We had 20 faculty/staff presenters, 33 lunch buddies, our three English faculty who read our Mitse essays, 12 registration/welcome volunteers, and so many who just helped out with logistics throughout the day.  ITS was on the spot for AV support and maintenance was just the best.

“Thank you everyone for welcoming our young women, creating so much positive energy and making our conference a success!”

Ross also thanked the committee who works throughout the year to plan the event: Cathy Barrow, Alisa Van Overstraeten, Cece Green, Amy Crow, Pam Gibellino, Rebecca Schinaman and Shirley Moore.
