East Elementary School (EES) students took part in a 5K Breast Cancer
Awareness Run on July 30. The girls who ran were quick to point out
that 5K equals 3.1 miles.
“This is the first year for some and others have done two or three
races.” said East Principal Kitty Zumbrink. “These are all good
students and good kids – great role models at East.”
Students running from EES are: Sophie Gettinger, Sarah Abell, Josi
Worden and Riley Hunt. Staff joining them were: Zumbrink, School
Secretary Becki Shumaker and Teacher Stacy Lee. All of the students are
also soccer players.
“We see each other when we run past our houses.” said Sarah Abell. Who,
along with several of the other girls and adults, stressed the safety
factor of never running alone. They all were quick to quote the slogan,
“safety in numbers.”
The girls also attended the Cancer Kicking Boot Camp run by Coy Boroff,
with lots of volunteer assistants. The camp is held at the end of May
and the girls ran two times a week.
“The camp built motivation.” said teacher Stacy Lee, who started with
the camp and has now run five 5K races this year. “It has built
motivation.”
“This is a great way to get people out.” said Shumaker, who ran with
her child and grandchild.
The race is held to raise awareness of breast cancer and also to raise
funds through entry fees. At the time of their interview, they were all
looking forward to Mandy’s Sunshine Fun Run to be held on September 17.
