A Patchwork of
Creative Ideas
Great Darke County Fair...
The Friday Sampler
By Elaine Bailey
Seats remained filled throughout the day for The Friday Sampler: A
Patchwork of Creative Ideas. The first session was “Something
‘Gourd’geous,” a 101 class on how to grow gourds and how to create
interesting and beautiful items such as birdhouses, vases, and
jewelry. The session was conducted by Terry Sipple, Jennie Moss,
and Tim Moss, members of The Ohio Gourd Society. See photos below.
Quilters left the session conducted by Karen Montgomery, a fabric and
pattern designer and owner of The Quilt Company located in
Pennsylvania, with numerous tips on quilting. She demonstrated
the use of the Quick Trim and Circle Ruler, a tool designed by
Montgomery for Creative Grids®, and the nifty fusible bias tape by
Clover, used in appliqué and other quilting projects. Montgomery
also demonstrated an easy method to mitering corners on quilts. See
photos below.
Eileen Litchfield presented “Cooking for 1 or 2? Let’s
Eat.” Litchfield said that nutrition need not be sacrificed when
cooking for one or two and jokingly added, “Having a balanced meal
doesn’t mean having a couple of cookies in each hand.”
Participants tried samples of the recipes that Litchfield
demonstrated. Copies of the recipes are available for PDF
download. To see photos and pdf download click here.
Cea Cohen Elliot concluded the day with a motivational presentation
entitled “Don’t Get Hit by a Car While Playing Bingo on a Deserted
Island.” Elliot engaged the audience with flair and humorous
anecdotes to consider these two points, “If you worry about things you
can’t control, why worry?” and “Each person has the ability to impact
another individual.” To see photos click here.
This was the twenty-sixth year for The Friday Sampler at the Darke
County Fair. It was sponsored by the 2011 Darke County
Agricultural Society and the OSU Extension, Darke County.
