The Last Day
Great Darke County Fair…
By Bob Robinson
I’d never been to the fair in the evening on the last day. From
everything I’d heard, traffic was supposed to be minimal, vendors would
be shutting down left and right and all involved would be putting
everything in wraps until next summer.
I didn’t see that at all.
Sure, there were locations on the fairway that were closed. Around
nine, vendors and other organizations in the Coliseum started wrapping
up (or had already wrapped up) their booths.
But the traffic was still there and many of the vendors that stayed
open had lines of people waiting with money in their hands.
Right up until the last minute, there were dollars to be made.
Due to other commitments and CNO’s demands on my time, I only made it
out five times this year. My plan was to repeat my previous year’s
attendance of all nine days.
It didn’t happen, but that last Saturday was my best fair experience
for the year. I was with my family and we spent the evening with Ball
State student and former Teen Editor Jordan Pridemore, her mother Linda
and her friend Sarah.
We all watched with wonder as they filled their “Bucket List” of things
to eat in less than three hours.
And had a wonderful surprise when we ran into an old friend and former
student, Janell, who was working one of the booths. It was a great but
brief visit. She had to get back to work and serve the people with
money in their hands.
Too soon it was time to say goodbye to the 2011 Great Darke County
Fair. Weary but feeling good, we walked out of Gate 2 for the last time
until next year.
It’s only 356 days until the 2012 Great Darke County Fair.
I’m already looking forward to it.
