Phyllis Mong & the Big
Red Machine
Mong gets a taste of “Quint 2” during
Fire and Police Appreciation Event
September 8, 2011
“That
was an evening I really had fun
and will never forget getting into that Big Red Machine Quint 2.”
Greenville
businesses stay open late
during the first Friday of each month, and it’s usually a time for
“First
Friday Events.” This month was the Circle Fire and Police Appreciation
Evening.
Main
Street Greenville’s Debbie
Sodders invited Senior Scribe Phyllis Mong to help greet people at the
event
during a Broadway Merchants meeting.
“I
was excited to do this,” she said.
“I’ve wanted to see Greenville’s ‘Big Red Machine Quint 2’ and meet the
firemen
and police officers. My nephews Tal and Tracy are Fireman for the
Pitsburg FD, Tal being the Capt. My son retired from the RI PD and my
dad was the
youngest
Greenville Police chief back in the late 40’s.”
It
brought back lots of memories, she
added.
“The
kids were excited about the big
red firetruck and getting to sit in the police car (hoping it was the
only time
they would do that).
Mong
said there was a scarecrow
decorating contest at the Courthouse, so she dressed up like a
scarecrow
(somewhat) to greet everyone and told the kids about the contest.
Several
scarecrows were made and will be on Broadway during Harvest Days for
the public
to judge. The names will be on the scarecrows.
Mong
thanked Katie and Diane for the
decoration items, and the firemen for letting her help and sit in the
“Big Red
Machine.” She also thanked Badge 144.
“We
all appreciate your service.”
