The past weekend held the annual Prairie Days at Shawnee Prairie, and
the turnout was as promising as ever. It seemed that the turnout was
actually larger than usual; one volunteer, Stephanie Mikesell, said
that they “expected 5,000 people” before the two day spree was over.
Throughout the reserve were many different types of entertainment to
keep all busy. The building was open to visitors to view the live
wildlife, make some crafts, or stroll through and look at the exhibits
for the Art Show. Drawings and raffles were also being held.
Outside, you could take a carriage ride around the perimeter, or walk
your way up the hill. Visiting the “General Store” to buy a snack,
making candles outside of the Sugar Shack, grabbing an apple snack of
cider or butter were common attractions.
Around back, the attendees could tour through the Log Cabin and enjoy
simple baked goods such as Pinwheels, and learn a little bit about
spinning yarn. Across the way, “The Trading Post” was set up for
business as people toured the tents and their goods.
Crafts were also available for the children… pioneer hats and lanterns
were only two. A melodrama was performed twice throughout the weekend,
despite the rainy weather, and different groups of bands were also in
and out.
