Ohio Supreme Court...
Social Studies
Teachers Learn More about the Judicial System
Sept. 19, 2011
More than 100 social studies teachers from across Ohio gathered for the
21st annual Law and Citizenship Conference sponsored by the Ohio Center
for Law-Related Education (OCLRE).
The two-day conference (Sept. 18-19) focuses on helping educators learn
more about the judicial system, federalism, technology in the
classroom, and financial literacy.
Supreme Court of Ohio Justices Terrence O’Donnell and Judith Ann
Lanzinger are serving as keynote speakers at the event. Justice Robert
Cupp and his wife, Libby, will be awarded the Founders’ Award,
presented by OCLRE and given for significant contributions to the
growth of law-related education. The Supreme Court of Ohio is a sponsor
of OCLRE.
A committee of teachers from across the state helped guide and plan the
conference and planned the topics based on what educators wanted to
become more skilled at to benefit their students.
Elementary, middle and high school educators have the opportunity to
listen to new and innovative approaches to teaching civics from their
peers in Ohio and across the country.
OCLRE Board of Trustees member Rick Dove said teachers will also
receive “unique perspectives about the redistricting process from the
chairs of the two major political parties” as well as receiving
comments “firsthand from Supreme Court Justices and a federal judge.”
“OCLRE’s annual Law and Citizenship Conference provides Ohio educators
with a unique opportunity to learn innovative ways to enhance their
students’ understanding of the rights and responsibilities of citizens
and the core functions of government,” Dove said. “Teachers who attend
the Law and Citizenship Conference interact with informative and
experienced presenters and receive tools, tips, and techniques that
they can use in the classroom to help OCLRE achieve its goal of
bringing citizenship to life for Ohio students.”
Other speakers at the conference include Judge Jeffery S. Sutton from
the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, Chairman
Chris Redfern from the Ohio Democratic Party, and Chairman Kevin DeWine
from the Ohio Republican party.
The conference kicks off Ohio’s mock trial season. Ohio’s High School
Mock Trial is the second largest in the nation, behind only California,
in number of teams participating.
The Supreme Court of Ohio is an active supporter of civic education.
The Ohio Judicial Center houses the award-winning Visitor Education
Center, named the best new museum in Ohio in 2009. Civic education is
also supported through the Justice Judy blog, an interactive online
forum where students and teachers can connect with Justice Judith Ann
Lanzinger to learn more about the Court and the Ohio judicial system.
Justice Lanzinger is the Ohio chair of iCivics.org, a national program
designed to inspire students through interactive civic education.
