Greenville Big Buddy Mentors
Big Brothers Big Sisters...
The High School mentoring program, which is in its tenth year, would
like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the High school
mentors that give so willingly of their time throughout the academic
year.
The program, which began back in September of 2001 started with a total
of nine high school volunteers and since has grown to over 85 volunteer
mentors from both Shelby & Darke County serving 97 children.
Through this program high school, sophomore, juniors and seniors from
area schools are matched up with area youth meeting with them two times
a month, after school, throughout the academic year. Activities
focus on educational and social enhancing activities, as well as,
personal safety & health & Fitness. All activities
are planned and supervised by Big Brothers Big Sisters staff
members.
Jennifer Bruns stated, “The students are really enjoying their mentors
and look up to them. Seeing the interaction between the elementary
students and high school students is really neat. There are special
friendships being built in this program”.
The locations for the 2011-2012 Big Buddies program included sites at
Woodland Heights Elementary school in Greenville & Versailles
Elementary schools in Darke County.
The 2011-2012 high school volunteer mentors for the Woodland Heights
Site include: Pankti Bhausar, Sasha Beavins, Nicole Birt, James Drees,
Britnee Dunfee, Kelsey Gelbaus, Jeanna Gnade, Savannah Hauberg, Amanda
Helfrich, Kari Kremer, DarPan Kaur, Brittany Kuhn, Sierra Leonard,
Ashley Marshall, Chelsea Martin, Jennifer Mayo, Will McCabe, Vivek
Patel, Ryan Simmons, Douglas Taylor, Jessica Thompson, & Hugo
VanderWalt.
Big Brother Big Sisters of Shelby and Darke County is an agency of the
United Way and an affiliate organization of Big Brothers Big Sisters of
America.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is currently looking forward to their upcoming
fund raiser, “Daffy Duck Derby”. This fund raiser allows individuals to
adopt rubber ducks which are launched down the river and compete for
prizes. This year the grand prize is $1000.00 cash. The
event which will be held on June 21, 2012 will also offer a 5k
run/walk. The 5k will begin at 8:15 that evening. If you are
