Elizabeth
Horner, Greenville Senior High School Salutatorian for class of 2012,
was
recognized on March 24 by The Fort GreenVille Chapter of Daughters of
American
Revolution (DAR) as this year’s “Good Citizenship” awardee. The recipient of this
award must have proven
qualities in four selection criteria:
Dependability (truthfulness, loyalty,
punctuality); Service
(cooperation, courtesy, considerations of others); Leadership
(personality,
self-control, and ability to assume responsibility); and Patriotism
(unselfish
interest in family, school, community, and nation) to an outstanding
degree.
Horner has
been demonstrating leadership on a national scale as NaFFAA Region 3
Youth
Chair and as a youth advocate/columnist for Inquirer.Net Global Nation
edition and
Mega Scene newspapers since 2011, in addition to her contributions to
local
publications - County News Online Teen Scribes, and as a guest
columnist/contributor to the Daily Advocate, Darke Journal, and Early
Bird.
This young
daughter of Darke County is currently a nominee to be one of the 10
National
Outstanding Filipino-Americans that will be a part of the
Filipino-American
Young Leaders Program. If
awarded this
honor, she will complete extensive leadership training in July and will
travel
to the Philippines, sponsored by the Ayala Foundation in partnership
with the
Philippine Embassy and Philippine Consulates General in the United
States. If
Horner is extended this unique opportunity, her platform is to promote
reading,
writing and communication skills programs as well as to encourage other
youth
asset building/development programs across the nation to promote faster
cultural assimilation, and positive and responsible citizenship of
Filipino-American youths as members of their respective United States
communities.
Horner is
currently a semi-finalist in the Claes Nobel (from the same family that
awards
the Nobel Prize) High School Scholarship.
The winner will be announced later in
April 2012. She has
been recognized in Ohio for being “a
champion of literacy … specifically for promoting literacy amongst
peers and in
the community” and “exemplary accomplishments as a youth”. She was also recognized on
April 19, 2011 by
the Greenville Board of Education for “Leading, Instructing, and
Inspiring the
Power of the Pen Team to Become Better Writers”.
She is the recipient of Mega Scene’s GP
Golden Seed Award (Dr. Jose Rizal hope of the future award) in August
2011.
When asked about her college plans, this
senior student states that she is currently in the process of making a
decision
which university with strong creative writing program she will attend. She has been offered
admission, merit
scholarships, and inclusion in the universities’ honors/core student
group that
include, at least 4 offers from selective schools.
Two are from the top 10 nationally
ranked
universities in the field of creative writing but she does not want to
say much
until she has made her decision and signed the acceptance letter. She has shared that one
offer will require
her to spend her entire freshman year in London as part of the core
program
learning experience and some great opportunities for internship in
publishing
and communication industry in New York City.
