Darke County Fair...
Director of
Agriculture Daniels tours fair
By Bob Robinson
Amid the sour news on the economy around the country, there are a few
states that have managed to shine, or at least begin to show recovery.
One of them is Ohio.
Despite the successes, there are still challenges. Ohio has suffered
considerable agricultural damage due to the summer drought.
Darke County is among others that has qualified for federal disaster
relief due to the damage on its crops by lack of rain.
In his first visit to the Darke County Fair, Ohio Agriculture Director
David Daniels acknowledged that while Ohio agriculture suffered a hit,
it’s still strong and the department is working to help farmers move
forward.
He noted that Darke County still plays leading roles in Ohio’s ag
output in corn (first), soybeans (first), hogs (two), cattle (four) and
dairy (seven).
See the report posted by Al Bliss last week at the end of this article.
Daniels has agriculture in his roots. He was personable and spoke the
same language as dozens of farmers and 4H participants as he toured the
agriculture opportunities presented by the fair.
He was impressed.
“How do I tell everyone that ag has suffered a hit when we can show
produce like this,” he said looking at the display of corn production
in the basement of the coliseum.
One of the high points of the tour was meeting, and having an
opportunity to talk with, a young lady who joined Daniels in the visit.
Erin Honnold was his legislative aid when Daniels was a State
Representative. He took her with him to the Department of Agriculture
as his Legislative Liaison. Both are from Greenfield, Ohio.
Honnold understood the value of agriculture – and history – to Ohio and
spoke positively of the state’s future. Refreshing when most media
reports depicted a hard time for our nation’s young people.
Daniels was appointed to the Director’s position when former Ag
Director Jim Zehringer was appointed Director of the Ohio Department of
Natural Resources.
