Darke County Fair…
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
The 2012 Fair
is Officially Open
By Bob Robinson
As it has for so many years in the past, the Official Opening of the
Great Darke County Fair was replete with public servants, fair
officials, media and a host of visitors and family members.
I saw old friends and made new acquaintances and had some interesting
discussions with many of them.
I got to dig Darke County Commissioner Mike Stegall a little when I
discovered he and Eagles 2177 Worthy President Greg Peck graduated from
the same high school. It was a good laugh.
Had an interesting conversation with Common Pleas Judge Jon Hein and
Candidate for Second District Court of Appeals Judge Jeffrey M. Welbaum…
“So have you been a journalist all your life,” Hein asked after the
introduction, “or longer?”
“Longer.”
“This is someone you can talk to,” Hein said to Welbaum. “Do an
interview with him and he’ll give you one of those typical questions
you always expect. Then he’ll dive into what he really wants to know.”
Then he added, “And you can trust him… just as you do Steve Baker.”
That was an honor. A humbling one.
Welbaum offered some insight when I commented it’s tough to interview a
judicial candidate because the things you really want to know they
aren’t allowed to talk about.
Like his opinion on gun control, for instance.
“I can’t give you my opinion on gun control,” he said. “But I can tell
you that I own three guns.”
My kind of guy. I think I’ll vote for him.
As Hein was walking toward the gathering of people for the ribbon
cutting, he commented…
“Yep, you’re a true journalist,” he said. “You’re not one of those guys
who decides to run for public office at some point in your life.”
Touché, Judge.
This year’s Junior Fair King and Queen are Lucas King, Franklin Monroe
High School, and Kelsey Burchett, Arcanum High School.
King shows hogs and Burchett works the Youth Building, Miscellaneous.
They both said they want to have as much fun as they can and get
involved in activities.
“It’s great to finally start OUR fair,” they said. They’d been to
several fairs outside the county already.
Lucas said he works hogs… he’s not really concerned about the swine flu
news. His parents suggested I do a little in-depth research about the
virus.
“You might be surprised at what you discover,” they said.
By the way, I said yesterday that I fully expected to run into students
from last year’s substituting classes during my roaming around the
fair. I hadn’t been on the fairgrounds more than 15 minutes when it
happened… I just didn’t expect two of them to be high school students
from one of my Edison classes.
Lucas King was in my Edison Communications 121 class last spring.
Several hours later I had a chance to talk with another COM 121
student… Shelby Schipps, a Cheerleader from Tri-Village High School.
Cheerleading contest photos and winners tomorrow on County News Online.
