Under the Big Tent Melodrama...
Wedded to a
Villain or… Locked in a Living Tomb
By Elaine Bailey
Oh, what a dilemma! To be married off to a villain! That’s
what the not-so-nice ole stepmother does with sweet Bonnie
Hartwell. Although Bonnie adamantly refused to marry anyone other
than her sweetheart, her stepmother plies her with guilt, forcing
Bonnie to succumb to marrying the dastardly villain Murgatroyd
Flashington. (Of course, only the audience can foresee that he is
a villain.)
Murgatroyd conspires with his partner Dr. Wormwood to forge a death
certificate and purchase a $5,000 State Farm insurance policy to be
collected following Bonnie’s orchestrated departure. While a
stolen tombstone is re-engraved with Bonnie’s name, she is banished to
an obscure asylum in New York.
But the love of her life Jack Manley does not let anything, including
ferocious Siberian Huskies, (profuse apologies to a sociable breed
mislabeled due to their wolfish appearance) get in the way of locating
his sweetheart. Even though Bonnie is hidden in the deep cellars
of the asylum, Jack Manley comes to her rescue, because he is the hero,
disguised as a door-to-door encyclopedia salesman for The New Omnibus
Encyclopedia-Dictionary and World Gazetteer. Upon discovering a
hidden treasure map in the body of a guitar bequeathed to Bonnie by her
loving father and learning from Murgatroyd’s jilted wife that
Murgatroyd Flashington is already married, Jack and Bonnie save
themselves, are showered with lavish apologies from the not-so-nice ole
stepmother, and pursue their own blissful life together.
Wedded to a Villain was performed by The Randy Players, a local civic
theatre group that performs in the Union City area.
