Spike & the
Bulldogs performance cut short due to weather
By Elaine Bailey
A disappointed audience of Spike & the Bulldogs 50’s and 60’s group
saw the performance cut short after only 30 minutes because of
inclement weather.
Despite earlier warnings of high winds and hail, not a person left
until Spike and soundman Phil reluctantly announced the show would have
to come to a close.
The popular group wrapped up the 2012 Union City State Line Heritage
Days with devoted fans dancing to music from the 50s and 60s at the
corner of Columbia and Oak.
Event organizers had announced fifteen minutes into the start of the
program that a severe thunderstorm warning with the potential of 60
mile-an-hour winds and pea-sized hail was issued. Val Asay, aka “Spike”
peered into the skies and assured the audience that they would keep up
a good pace and sing as many songs as they could. Not a person
left.
For the next twenty minutes, everyone in the audience remained to hear
oldies originating from Buddy Holly, Wilson Pickett, and the Beatles.
It was only when spikes of lightning appeared in the distant north that
it was announced that the show would have to come to a close.
Spike and the other band members Bob, Wayne, Bernie, Jim and Mark are
popular in the Union City community, having numerous returning
performances for the close of the annual State Line Heritage
Days. The band maintains a vigorous performance schedule for over
100 venues during a year across the tri-state region, while holding
onto day jobs.
Although folks were disappointed in the premature conclusion, they were
pleased that for at least thirty minutes they were musically
transported to an era of their youth by musicians who enjoy performing
and enjoy returning to Union City.
