Big Brothers Big Sisters
Once Little Sister now making impact as Big Sister

Though it seems like not long ago Amber Couchot was involved as a Little in the Big Brother Big Sisters program, she has now transitioned into a Big in the same program. Amber has a love for children and wants to make a positive impact in their lives. Having experienced the positive impact Big Brothers Big Sisters had on Amber as a child, she felt compelled to become a Big as an adult. Amber spoke highly of the program saying, “Big Brothers Big Sisters had a big impact on me as a kid. It allowed me to build a bond with another adult that emotionally supported me. I came from a single parent home and having a Big Sister helped me just get out and have fun and be myself.”

The belief Amber has in the program has led to her interaction with a Little since 2008! Amber now enjoys spending time with her Little, McKenzie Leiss, and giving back to the organization that gave so much to her as a child. They enjoy activities that include swimming, going to the movies, making dinner and going to the park. No matter what they are doing, the time spent together is part of a positive, nourishing relationship that is rewarding for the Big and Little. “The most rewarding part of being a Big is just spending time with my Little. We have a lot of fun together and I enjoy talking to her and spending time with her,” Amber says of her time spent with McKenzie.

Having a full-circle of giving within the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization showcases just how much of a difference the program makes in the lives of others. The opportunity to provide a positive relationship for a child who may not have one otherwise is very fulfilling as Amber has experienced first-hand. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County is a non-profit United Way member, social service agency. The program specializes in matching children from at-risk families with adult volunteer Big Brothers and Sisters. These adults provide children with positive role modeling, as well as new educational and social activities. If you would like to make the difference in the life of a child but are unable to volunteer at this time, Big Brothers Big Sisters has many other volunteer opportunities throughout the year. In particular, the 2013 Bowl For Kids’ Sake event, serving as the largest fundraising event for Big Brothers Big Sisters is scheduled for March 1 & 3.
