Attorney
Detling mentors Arcanum student
Hackworth,
interested in the legal profession, viewed trials, sentencing and
pretrial
hearings
January 17. 2012
James (Jim)
Detling, local attorney, and candidate for the Darke County
Juvenile/Probate
Court position, recently spent a day mentoring Arcanum High School
student Lexi
Hackworth as part of the Darke County ESC Career Mentorship Program. The program is intended to
match a student
with a local individual who works in the student’s area of interest. Ms. Hackworth is
interested in the legal
profession.
Lexi had
the opportunity to shadow Jim during the entire day.
She was able to view three trials in Judge
Monnin’s Court, and several sentencing and pretrial hearings in Judge
Hein’s
Court. She was
given as many hands-on
tasks during the day, where appropriate.
Detling
noted that he and Lexi had a particularly busy day.
“Lexi certainly got more than she bargained
for on that day”, noted Detling. “It
was
a very productive day, and I know Lexi will have a greater
understanding of the
legal profession and system from this moment on.
I think this program is a wonderful
opportunity for any student who wants some exposure in a profession of
interest.”
The
Darke County ESC Career Mentorship
Program was established over 15 years ago.
Its goal is to provide Darke County high
school students like Lexi with
a beneficial learning experience in the student’s career interest area.
Each
student is given the opportunity to be mentored by two local
professionals of
the community. The
program provides
approximately 240 placements to Darke County high school students each
year. The
coordinator of the program is
Renee Hackney. For
more information on
the program, interested students are encouraged to contact their school
guidance counselor.
