Greenville Concerts in the Park
Everyone
definitely “In the Mood”
By Elaine Bailey
Not a note nor a stitch were dropped as Emma and Kathi kept time with
their own instruments during the concert presented by The Greenville
Municipal Big Band on Sunday evening at the Marling Band Shell in the
Greenville City Park.
Kathi’s knitting needles kept time as her husband JR Price performed on
an alto sax. The audience enjoyed his solo, Elvis impersonation
in “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and his solo during “The Girl from
Ipanema.” Band director, Doug Albright, praised Price, who will
be conducting the full Greenville Municipal Concert Band on July 15,
when he wittily interjected, “We’re paying him by the note.”
Misty, a rescued gray feline enjoyed her second year of attending the
concerts in the park. And if the instrumentalists weren’t sure what to
do, David Warner, on the drum set, reassured them, “Don’t worry; just
follow me.”
The sixteen members of the Jazz Band comfortably performed before an
enthusiastic crowd, in a temperature that was twenty degrees cooler
than the record-breaking temperatures of over 100 degrees set on Friday
and Saturday. Everyone was definitely “In the Mood,” the
crowd-pleasing final number.
Other songs included: “I’m a Believer,” “Green Onions,” “Don’t
Get around Much Anymore,” “Leap Frog,” “Mack the Knife,” and “When Big
Bands Ruled the Earth,” a new song released in 2011 by Larry Neeck,
Featured vocal soloist from Arcanum, Katelyn Shellabarger, sang “Blue
Skies” and The Summer Wind.” Shellabarger is a senior majoring in Music
Therapy at the University of Dayton.
The Greenville Municipal Concert Band will perform on July 15, and 22,
August 5 and 26, and conclude the season on September 2. The Jazz
Band will have one more performance on August 12.
