Eagles fireworks a success despite weather!
By Bob Robinson

The heck with the weather! The Eagles simply moved its fireworks from an uncooperative night to a cooperative one… and the community showed up.

More than 2,000 people attended the annual Greenville Eagles Independence Day Celebration at Shade Road and got the show of their lives. The 25-minute display capped off with a shower of lights, colors and sounds that filled the sky and brought the crowd to its feet with clapping, hoots and cheers.

Eagles officers closed their downtown facility at 6 p.m. Monday, and opened Shade Road simultaneously. Visitors started arriving shortly after that, with the majority arriving between 8 and 9 p.m.

The change in plans was necessary due to a thunderstorm arriving about 4:30 p.m. on the scheduled Sunday night. First, the fireworks display was moved to 11 p.m., then postponed to Monday due to flooding, wet grounds and concerns about another storm still on the way.

The second storm never materialized, but some of the scheduled fireworks had taken in moisture; they were replaced for Monday evening.

The evening went as planned the previous night with the exception of the bands that had prior commitments and couldn’t make the change. The Eagles Ladies Auxiliary sold popcorn, hamburgers, hot dogs and snacks. Other concessions were provided by Rismiller’s, Bowman’s, Kettle Corn and Grumpy’s. Games, the bounce house and a packed playground kept kids occupied until it was time for the fireworks… and adults were treated to music, drawings and Karaoke throughout the evening.

Eagles Worthy President Greg Peck thanked officers and volunteers for their hard work putting the event together, and County News Online for getting the word out about the last minute schedule change. CNO, in return, wishes to thank WTGR Tiger Radio, Darke Journal and all of its facebook friends for helping to get the word out.

No camera can capture the reality of a fireworks show and, unfortunately, the point and shoot camera that does an excellent job with the vast majority of photos on CNO, simply wasn’t up to the task Monday night. However, if you weren’t there, the photos offered will give you a taste of what you missed. Also, be sure to check out photos of the reason for the scheduled change and the visitors who enjoyed a great show Monday night.

One final note… as appropriate, the reason we celebrate Independence Day was noted to the visitors. Worthy President Peck talked about the thanks we owe to our forefathers and the military for the sacrifices they made to keep this celebration possible. He and his family then led everyone through Lee Greenwood’s “Proud to be an American.”
