Greenville Friends of the Library
Library ‘Friends’ note successful year and thank supporters

With the help of its many supporters, 2012 gave the Friends of the Greenville Public Library ample opportunity to fulfill its goal of enriching, promoting and sponsoring literacy efforts in our community.  We have endeavored to focus public attention on our Library, to stimulate the use of the Library’s resources and enable more in our community to use its services.

Over the years, FOL has enabled the Library to purchase equipment, materials and furnishings over and above its annual budget.  For several years, the cost of the Genealogy Specialist was covered by the FOL.  When shades were needed to prevent the excessive sun and heat from the large windows in the computer room, the organization stepped in to help. When there is a need, the Friends of the Greenville Public Library want to be that supporting arm.

Our annual winter/spring Authors’ Nights were well received by the community.  The ambiance of Montage combined with the live music were the perfect setting for each of the three evenings. Friends always purchase books from each author to donate to the Library.  This is a great opportunity to encourage writers and also give the community insight into new literature and  how authors work at their art.

Each year Friends support the Summer Family Reading Program.  This year was especially exciting with hundreds of families attending events under the trees on the Library lawn..  Attendees noted that it would be hard to decide which of the many special guests they most enjoyed.

This year’s Annual Used Book Sale netted almost $2000 to provide some extra funds along with generous donor contributions for Library needs.  In September, we will again be soliciting good used books to be delivered to PAWS Bingo Hall or to the Library  until next April 15.  At that time, we sort and organize some 4,000 books to get ready for our 2013 Annual Used Book Sale May 17 and 18.  This year, the book sale proceeds along with donations will help with the purchase of the new library security system,  bulletin boards, children’s area World  Book Encyclopedia, and a theater system for the much used 3rd floor conference room.

All that FOL has accomplished in its goal of supporting the Library has only been possible because of the loyal members and donors.  Generous donors include John and Nancy Person,  Dale and Wanda Rismiller, Wayne Coblentz, Bob and Debbie Kuhnle, Jeffrey Feltman, Eunice Steinbrecher, Terry and Becky Hartnagle, Rosalie Schultz, William and Gloria Hole, Martin and Virginia Tienken, Leah Lines, Ronda Boone, Tracy Haines, Roberta Williams, Dan and Marty Schipfer, Shirley Thompson, and Ray and Bettye Laughlin.  Corporate donors include Second National Bank, Hittle Buick GMC, Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home, Hartzell Veterinary Service, Inc., Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Mercer Savings Bank, State Farm Insurance Agency, Mote and Associates, Inc., and Brethren Retirement.  A special note of appreciation to Leo and Hazel Blanchard, and to Becky Conley, representing the family of Jeanne Morris for contributions in memory of Jeanne, whom we will all miss!

The Friends of the Greenville Public Library is so grateful to the many who support  activities and projects. We regret if we have failed to mention any of those generous patrons who make it possible for us to be real friends to our Library. For more information about Fol, call 548-1916.
