New Madison July 4 Parade
Community in a
celebratory mood despite heat
By Bob Robinson
Temps were playing tag with three digits by the time the New Madison
Independence Day parade kicked off at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Gone was the breeze that provided brief relief earlier in the day at
Ansonia.
The heat didn’t stop residents of the small community from setting up
for the annual parade. Like their counterparts up north, they grouped
into the shaded areas on both sides of the street.
Participants weren’t as fortunate. As they lined up near the Snack Shop
north of town, most found themselves in the direct sun.
No one complained. It was July 4, Independence Day.
Further south, at the house still painted (red, white and blue) from
the Lady Patriots basketball run for the gold earlier this year,
hospitality was the name of the day. CNO volunteer Amy Farmer, owner of
the new One Stop Senior Insurance Agency, offered an air conditioned
respite plus chilled beverages to family and friends.
About 10 minutes after three, the crowd on the street saw the first
flashing lights heading toward them. The parade had begun.
As with most community parades, participants included local first
responders, public servants, local businesses, community service
organizations and more.
Residents stood for the American Legion Honor Guard and applauded the
Tri-Village Marching Band. Some groups sought donations for their
non-profit charities and others offered free water to the thirsty
parade goers.
Candy was tossed out to kids on both sides of the street like… well…
like candy! One group even distributed Frisbees to the kids.
All too soon the event was over. The last police car was following the
last participant, with a trail of vehicles behind it. Some parade goers
headed to the school for the various vendors and games. Others headed
home to cool off… in a few hours most would be setting up for New
Madison’s “Best Fireworks in Darke County!”
Darke County is home to many traditions and hidden treasures. Not the
least of them is pride in Country… and Community.
